  • Social Resources of Health and Equity | Wellcoaches

Coaching for Social Resources & Health Equity Approved for 10.5 hours of Continuing Education What is the course about? With the emerging awareness of inequities within healthcare, there has been a shift to address Social Determinants of Health (SDOH). The World Health Organization defines SDOH as "the non-medical factors that influence health outcomes. They are the conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live, and age, and the wider set of forces and systems shaping the conditions of daily life." Given the identification of SDOH, we assert that coaching is a social resource for health , with the potential to improve social capital in disadvantaged populations. Through this authentic generative relationship, coaching can be a stabilizing force and the core driver of behavior change. DIVERSIFYING THE WORKFORCE "Given that psychological safety is so fundamental to well-being, we have to ask if it is possible to truly promote well-being in the absence of a more diverse health and well-being workforce." - Sara Johnson, Equity, Justice, and the Role of the Health Promotion Profession in Dismantling Systemic Racism We must recognize the lack of diversity, and the lack of access to resources, in our own industries. To this end, Wellcoaches has joined with leaders from ACE, ACSM, ACLM and the NBHWC to collaborate in addressing increasing racial diversity within our industries and providing opportunities for education in underserved communities. healthCare Alliance for Resources and Equity (CARE) Health Equity Scholarship Apply here UPLIFTING THE UNDERSERVED We believe that pathways to health and well-being are a right and must be accessible by all. With guest experts including clergy, practicing front line physicians, faculty from University of Maryland, Johns Hopkins University and others, students will be trained in how to assess treatment options, risks and benefits before consenting to a procedure. They learn how to use the latest personal medical technology to their advantage and how to optimize and ‘decode’ a doctor visit. Students discover how to identify, de-stigmatize, and access treatment when needed for spiritual, emotional, and mental health. After completion of the training, and learning peer coaching skills, participants will be registered with Kindred Coaches™ to actively work voluntarily with communities within the diocese. Thank you to Carol Scott, Karen Mercer, Shannon McCullough, Sheryl Ricard and Charles Inniss for your vision for this project! Providing skills for mindful listening and inquiry enables peer coaches to build a trusting relationship with other residents while encouraging them to display empathy and compassion; leverage the science of positive emotions and discover strengths; and, uncover the motivation and confidence to set healthy goals. Thank you to Marcus Kirkman and Sheryl Richard for your commitment to this project!
